Greene County Trial Week

Last weeks trial week in Greene County started off with Chief Judge William A. Prior pleading 15 cases and issuing several bench warrants. On Tuesday, juries were selected for the three cases that were to be tried throughout the rest of the week. The first trial, State of Georgia v. Charles Smith, began Tuesday afternoon with opening statements and the state’s first witness. The case lasted until Wednesday, with the jury returning a verdict of guilty of Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Distribute (Morphine), Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Distribute (Oxycodone), and two counts of Drugs not in Original Container on Thursday morning. Mr. Smith was sentenced to 30 years with the first 10 to be served in confinement. The second trial of the week, State of Georgia v. Muhaimin Najeeullah, began Thursday morning. By mid-afternoon, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of Interference with Government Property. Mr. Najeeullah was sentenced to two years with 90 days to be served in confinement. Mr. Najeeullah was also instructed to pay restitution for the damaged property. The third trial, State of Georgia v. Shannan Scrivens, began Friday morning. Jurors returned a verdict of guilty of Improper Driving on a Divided Highway before lunch. Mr. Scrivens was sentenced to six months of probation, 20 hours of community service, 48 hours in jail, and was instructed to pay a $500 fine.
