Larry Lee Smith was convicted in Greene County of trafficking methamphetamine and two counts of furnishing prohibited items to inmates following a jury trial on Thursday, September 11th. The evidence showed that Smith was in the backseat of a vehicle stopped at the 138 exit ramp on I20. Beside him was a large black trash bag that contained three bundles of tobacco, cell phones, marijuana, and a kilogram of methamphetamine.
There were also two drones modified to be able to carry and drop contraband into prisons in the trunk of the car. As Deputy Cowdrey saw what was in the trash bag, Smith and one of his codefendants took off running. Smith was quickly apprehended.
Judge Stephen A. Bradley sentenced Smith to fifty years with the first forty-two to be served in prison. The case was tried by Assistant District Attorney Blayne May with assistance from ADA Nevin Cox. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration for their help in this case.
